Seeking medical attention can be a tricky business these days. It seems the first thing the provider asks isn’t what is wrong with you, it is about your insurance. When seeking alternative treatments such as chiropractic it is important to know before you go.

What Does A Chiropractor Do?

When an injury has been sustained to the neck or back it is a good time to think about seeing a doctor of chiropractic medicine. Even if a significant fall has happened it might be a good idea to be checked. Chiropractors look for vertebrae that are out of alignment possibly pinching nerves or impeding full function of them. Using manual manipulation, massage or other non-invasive methods, they gently encourage the re-alignment of the offending vertebrae.

New Technology Improves Care

Maybe due to some of the resistance they get from the general medical community or maybe because they are just more open to new things, new technology has been accepted readily be the chiropractic world. Now a new machine makes it even easier for your chiropractor to see areas of concern or weakness. It is called Insight Millennium technology. It is a great advancement for better pinpointing problems.

Do Insurance Companies Cover Chiropractic?

The good news is that most major medical policies cover some treatments by chiropractors. Visits are usually limited in number and not everything may be covered. It is important for you to check your personal policy. The nice thing is that acceptance is growing for the practice and the demand is growing. This makes it harder on the insurance companies to say “no” to requested services.

Pursuing a Technical Medical Career

A technical medical career refers to a career in the medical field where you are working with technology rather than directly with patients. Jobs in the technical medical category have a wide range, from Clinical Laboratory Technologist to Radiologic Technologists, with so many more options to consider.

Obtaining a technical medical degree can be as easy as receiving an associate’s degree to spending several years in training. Generally, though, you will need to get a bachelor’s degree focused on medical technology with biology and chemistry background. Some of these degrees are available through online college classes, while others require hands-on training. It all depends on where you want to end up. Working with each different type of technology is different, so it’s a good idea to get a background in several different types of pieces of technology.

There are several popular technical medical careers. One example would be a laboratory technologist. This would be the type of person to perform blood tests, work with bacterial infections, and perform other types of lab work. To do this, you normally need a bachelor’s degree in medical technology, which is a type of degree that can lead you to several places.

If you want to enter the medical field but are not interested in interacting with patients, pursing a technical medical career may be the correct path for you. You will be able to help patients, enjoy the medical and scientific field, and make plenty of money without having to deal with patients face to face on a regular basis.

The Holistic Approach of Alternative Medicine ...

Image via Wikipedia

There is more and more acceptance for alternative medicine or a holistic approach. With the growing acceptance comes a greater demand for providers.

Become Familiar With Positions

If you are interested in becoming a provider of alternative medicine you should do some research to see what kinds of careers are available. Some of the better known positions are chiropractic and herbalist. Do you know much about osteopathy? What do you know about becoming a pharmacist for holistic medicine? What about working in a laboratory for the processing of herbs and treatments? One of the most accepted in the traditional medical community is that of the osteopath.  All of these are worth the time researching them.

Unique Patients

Maybe you don’t like dealing with humans. Did you know holistic medicine is popular on the veterinary side of medicine as well? There are even chiropractors for horses! Being able to help cure a family pet with something besides surgery is a great gift to be able to give.

Salary Expectations

If you choose to go the route of the DO, or Doctor of Osteopathy, you will receive much the same salary as a regular medical doctor. In today’s medicine, DO’s are often seen working side by side with MD’s. Their philosophy may differ some as well as the extent of their training of manual manipulation and use of holistic medicine but other than that it is very similar, as are the salaries. Many of the other fields tend toward being self employed with comparable salaries. Chiropractic is somewhat reimbursable through insurance so it is a little more secure financially, but not a lot.

Chiropractic – Is It For Me?

The world of chiropractic medicine seems to be growing. Did you know that it is next in career choice after doctor and dentist? Are you familiar with what it is? Do you go for a weekly or monthly treatment?

Early Beginnings

The field of chiropractic medicine really began back in 1895 when Dr. Daniel D. Palmer convinced a janitor to let him adjust his spine. The janitor had sustained a back strain years earlier and had immediately lost his hearing. Dr. Palmer believed that there was a connection. He convinced the janitor, adjusted his spine and the janitor’s hearing was restored. Thus, chiropractic had its beginnings.

Holistic Medicine

Chiropractic looks at patients as whole beings and tries to treat them that way. You may have frequent headaches, diabetes and pain in your left foot. All the complaints would be considered and treated in a combined way if they seemed to be connected. Treatments are less invasive that many traditional medicine practices and often just as effective.

How About A Career in Chiropractic?

You may have grown up going to the chiropractor. Maybe you are new to it as a patient but you’re impressed and want to help other people receive the same relief you have. What kind of a GPA do you need to get into school? Where are the schools? One of the best things you can do is to do some volunteer work at a clinic and talk to the doctor there about your desire to become a chiropractor. Some of the best advice comes from those in the field. You also might check into becoming a doctor of osteopathy or DO.

Holistic Medicine May Be Just The Answer For Some

How many times have you visited the doctor and they have declined to talk about an ailment different than the one for which you set the appointment?

Changing in Standards of Practice

They way your doctor relates to you today has changed. You get in the office and the doctor is limited by his supervisors (this didn’t happen 10 years ago) to 15 or 20 minutes for everything they need to do to answer one complaint. If you have other questions or needs you are politely glossed over and asked to come back.

Holistic Medicine

As the name implies, holistic medicine tries to look at the whole picture. Our bodies are not compartmentalized with no crossover influence of one system to the other. Our brain and spinal cord are intricately attached to every other system in our bodies. During a visit with a chiropractor or other holistic provider they want to know what is going on throughout the body so they can treat the whole thing. Somethings may or may not be intertwined but that is what the provider is trained to assess.

Patients Are Intricately Involved

Providers with a holistic approach place a lot of responsibility on the patient. Treatments are prescribed but patients are expected to do their part in following treatments to healing. Patients also have the opportunity to weigh and give feedback to the providers on what they think of the proposed treatment. They are expected to be “in the know” regarding how their body reacts what other options may be available to treat your symptoms. Holistic medicine is not a replacement for traditional methods, just a great companion to them.
